How to Make Acrylic Bookends

Laser engraving acrylic bookends make for unique, memorable gifts for book lovers, employees, clients, or as corporate giveaways. If you have book-loving friends too, try making one for them.

Now is going to use a Thunder Laser system to make acrylic bookends. Let’s start to explore fun with the laser!

Material: 3mm clear acrylic

Laser head: 2" head

Laser engraving machine: Thunder Bolt Pro32 55watt

Processing Mode:

Engraving speed: 1500mm/s

Engraving power:25%

DPI: 400

Ecthing Line speed: 1500mm/s

Ecthing Line power:25%

Cutting speed : 20mm/s

Cutting power: 70%

You can also draw on CorelDraw and then click on the laser plug-in to switch to the laser software. Set the appropriate parameters on the laser software and click Download to transfer the design to your laser engraving machine.

Place the acrylic on the work table of the laser engraving machine, move the laser head to the center of the boards, adjust the focal length, press the “Origin” on the LCD control panel to set the starting position, and then press the “Start” to start the work.

When done, get the laser bookends out, then we can clean them. The nature of acrylic is that after engraving it produces some white substance. And we can remove the substance with a toothbrush and running water. 

Place the bookend on the baseboard with the hand part extended so that the etching line are aligned with the edge of the baseboard. Press the bookend with a thick board, then heat the marked lines with a heat gun.

The acrylic will soften with the heat, and bend the bookend to create a right angle before it cools. Be careful not to get burned, and let's do it ourselves!
