How to Load a Cartridge Into a Deltec Cosmo Pump

Note: This instructable requires prior knowledge of needed amount of insulin in the cartridge.
Caution: The top of the insulin vial must be cleaned with an alcohol swab before beginning. Care must also be taken while handling the needle.
Gathering Materials




Filling the Cartridge

Attach the needle to the cartridge by twisting into place clockwise and remove lid Do not throw lid away.

Pull air into the cartridge to the desired setting, creating as precise a measurement as possible. The air will compensate for the insulin to be removed from the vial and prevent the creation of a vacuum. A vacuum may cause the vial to break, causing injury.

Insert the needle into the spongy center of the top of the vial as shown

Push the air into the vial


Thump the vial with your finger to bring the air bubbles to the top of the cartridge

Push the plunger up to remove air bubbles, thumping again if necessary

Return plunger to setting in step 1

Remove needle from vial

Replace the lid to the needle

Twist off the needle with its lid

Put the white cap on, twisting it clockwise a half turn until firm

Turn the plunger a quarter turn until it loosens and can be removed
Loading the Cartridge

Insert the cartridge into the pump, twisting it clockwise a half turn until firm

Place the pump cap over the white cap. Do not attempt to twist on.

Press the right oval button

Press the down arrow button until Load is highlighted

Press the right oval button again 3 more times until the pump begins to draw the cartridge down

Line up the teeth of the pump cap and twist a quarter turn until firm

Twist off the white cap
Attaching Tubing and Infusion Set



Attach infusion set to tubing at a perpendicular angle as shown and twist into place

Attach tubing to pump(twisting clockwise until firm, a quarter to half turn)
Filling Infusion Set

Fill tubing should already be highlighted. (If the pump has returned to the alert screen, press the right button.) Hold the infusion set to the light until you see the small needle inside.

1. Select Fill tubing by pressing the right oval button. Keep your finger on the right arrow button ready to press it again quickly when the insulin comes out of the needle (Important: See the next 3 steps before beginning)



1. Select start by pressing the right oval button

2. Watch the needle inside the infusion set as the pump pushes insulin through the infusion set and tubing.

3. Press the right oval button when you see insulin come out of the needle


Press the left oval button twice to return to the main menu screen
