How to Knit Wave Stitch

If the borders of your projects and garments need more life, try adding a border with a different texture that really draws attention. It’s a quick and easy solution that will give a new look to your pieces.

This stitch is a multiple of 33 stitches + 2 extra to create borders on either side. It’s not reversible.

Remember to knit 1 at the beginning and end of each row.

Row 1: knit 1. Purl until there is 1 stitch remaining and knit it.

Row 2: knit all stitches.

Row 3: knit 1. Knit 2 together, knit 3. *Yarn over, knit 1*. Repeat from * to * 7 time more. Knit 2 together. Slip 2 stitches onto your right needle, knit 1 and pass the 2 slipped stitches over it. Knit 3. Repeat from * to * 8 times. Knit 2, SKPO and knit the last stitch. You will have a total of 47 stitches.

Row 4: knit 1. Slip 2 stitches knitwise them and then purl them together through the back loop. Purl 19, slip 2 onto your right needle, purl 1 and pass the 2 slipped stitches over it, purl 19, purl 2 together. Knit 1. You will have a total of 43 stitches.

Row 5: knit 1. Knit 2 together, knit 17. Slip 2 stitches onto your right needle, knit 1 and pass the 2 slipped stitches over it. Knit 17. SKPO. Knit 1. You will have a total of 39 stitches.

Row 6: knit 1. Slip 2 stitches as if to purl them and then purl them through the back loop. Purl 15, slip 2 onto your right needle, purl 1 and pass the 2 slipped stitches over it, purl 15, purl 2 together. Knit 1. You will have a total of 35 stitches.

Row 7: repeat row 3.

Row 8: repeat row 4.

Row 9: repeat row 5.

Row 10: repeat row 6.

Repeat rows 1 through 10 until you reach the desired length.

This stitch comes out perfectly if you knit it with our petite wool, though for this example we are using Pima cotton and 5 mm wooden needles. Try it and share your pictures with us on social media using the hashtag #weareknitters!
