How to Jump Start a Vehicle

Hi my name is Dylan Schaible, from previous experience with my old pickup, I had to jumpstart the battery quite often. Without spending around a Hundred dollars on a new battery, it might just need a jump. I am going to demonstrate seven easy steps how to properly jumpstart any vehicle in order to get it back on the road.

If you go to start a vehicle and it will not turn over, and clicks. The battery is most likely dead. First, equip with the proper safety equipment, such as safety glasses and gloves; should also unplug any accessories like phone chargers and other cords and make sure the headlights are turned off.

Second step, pull a running vehicle as close to the dead car as possible and make sure both vehicles are in park and reaching distance for the jumper cables being used.

Third of all, make sure both battery’s in the vehicles are clean. Locate the two metal terminals on the battery and take a rag or towel or wire brush to them.

The fourth step is one of the main steps, first take the jumper cables and grab one of the red clips and attach it to the dead battery on the terminal that says “pos” or +, then take the second red clip and hook it to the positive terminal on the running vehicles battery. While still at the running vehicle, attach the black clip the negative terminal, last you take the last black clip and hook it on to the negative on the dead vehicles battery.

Now it is time for the “jump” when all clips are properly connected, get into the dead vehicle and try starting it. If it does not start, make sure connections are good on cables and let the running vehicle sit and charge the dead battery. Then try again.

Once the battery is brought back to life, keep the vehicle running and remove the clips in the reverse order that they were placed them in. First take off the negative clips then the positive. Do not let the clips touch.

Finally, drive the vehicle for about 15 to 30 minutes to ensure the battery charges. If the vehicle does not start after Turing it off, the battery probably isn’t holding a charge and needs to be replaced.
