How to Hang an Internal Door

Hang A Internal Door.jpg
This guide shows you how to hang a new Internal door. It's a fairly simple job although some DIY skills are needed to cut the holes for the hinges in the new door. The job should take roughly about 2-3 hours.

Removing the Old Door

Unscrew the old door, removing the screws from the bottom hinge before the top hinge. [NOTE: Where the hinges or screws have been painted over, chip away with an old screwdriver.] Make sure the door is well supported when the last screw is taken out of the top hinge.

Cutting the New Door to Size

Position the new door in the door frame to see if it needs adjusted. Use the old door as a template by laying it on top of the new door and marking where to plane or cut. Use a panel saw if you need to take more than 6mm off the height of the new door, then sand it smooth. If you need to trim less off than 6mm then use a power plane. Ideally, there should be a 2mm gap between the door and the frame.

Fixing the Hinges on the Door Frame

Screw each hinge to the door frame with a single screw and open the hinges. The hinge pivots (edges) should stick out from the frame edge.

Unscrew the hinges from the door frame and lay them on the edge of the door, making sure they are lined up correctly. Draw around the hinge flaps and use a straight edge to mark the width of the hinge on to the door. Using a chisel make a series of cuts across the wood at 5mm intervals to the same depth as the flap

Hanging Your New Door

With the door supported on wedges fix the hinge flaps to the door frame. [Use only one screw so that you can make adjustments.] Check that the door opens and closes easily. If it does then your ready to fix the rest of the screws.

Painting the Door

When painting the door always follow the wood  grain for a smooth finish. Dust down the door and wipe with a cloth. Wedge the door open and apply a primer coat and undercoat. Once dry, paint the door the color of your choice.

Finished!
