How to Fix a Broken Flashlight

In this instructable, we will learn how to turn a broken flashlight into an LED flashlight.

Supplies

You will need:

  • 1 x 3mm LED light of your choice.
  • Soldering iron.
  • Solder
  • 2 x AA batteries.
  • 1 x Toggle Switch.
  • 1 x AA battery pack.
  • 1 wire.
  • 1 x 500mm Cardboard

Inserting Battery Pack Into the Shell

The initial step involves organizing all your primary materials. Next, carefully solder a tiny hole into the torch's shell; this is where the wires from your battery pack will pass through. Then, thread the wires from your battery pack through this small hole in the switch's shell. Ensure that the black wire is directed upward toward the upper part of the shell, while the red wire is routed downward to the lower part of the shell.

Now, proceed to solder the black wire from the battery pack onto the smaller rod of the LED light. Once this connection is secure, take a red wire (representing the positive charge) and solder it onto the other rod of the LED light. Ensure the solder joints are strong and secure to maintain a reliable electrical connection.

To complete the circuit, follow these steps:

1. Take the other end of the red wire that you previously soldered onto the LED light and solder it onto the right terminal of the switch.

2. Solder the red wire from the battery pack onto the other terminal of the switch.

Make sure your solder connections are well-made to ensure a reliable and secure electrical circuit.

Hiding the Circuit Into the Shell

For the final step, insert the entire circuit into the switch's shell.

The first thing we need to do in order to achieve that is to remove all the components that are currently in the flashlight. If some components are too hard to remove, you can leave them inside, but you should ideally be looking to remove the current source of lighting in the flashlight and the switch at the very least.

To simplify this process, you can pre-position the red wire that you soldered onto the LED to where the switch will be placed within the shell before soldering the switch. This way, the circuit will already be inside the shell when you finish soldering, making assembly smoother and more efficient.

Test It Out

The flashlight should now be functional once again!
