There is an easy way to find direction using the north star, but it can only be seen in the northern hemisphere. Many people in the southern hemisphere wonder how to find direction. This shows how to find direction in the southern hemisphere using the southern cross.

You need to first find the southern cross. It is 4 brighter stars in a cross shape. Look at the picture for a reference. It is also on the Australian flag. In the picture it is the four brightest stars.

Finding a Southern Landmark From There

Find the two stars that make up the long part of the cross. Follow the line made by the two stars to five times the distance away from the constellation as the distance between the two stars. The imaginary point at the end of this imaginary line is south, north is directly behind, west to the right, east to the left. It is helpful if you find a land mark in the distance that is the direction you are going to keep yourself oriented.
