How to Drop an Egg One Story Without It Breaking : Autorotation

Autorotation is when the rotor turns because of the wind moving up from beneath it. It is used by helicopter pilots to land if their engine stops.
Here the same principle is used in an attempt to land an egg safely on the ground.

The Science which can be taught from this is F = MA

Force = Mass x Acceleration

So, keep the Mass down by using ballons and cardboard, Keep the Acceleration down by using a rotor to slow the fall to make the resulting Force when the egg hits the ground small.

Make the Rotors and Capsule

The 3 rotors are made from cardboard and attached to a tetrahedral capsule. The capsule is made from 4 ballons and a piece a trianglar cardboard The egg is scured in between the balloons with tape. See: Attaching 4 ballons to a piece of trianglar cardboard

Attach Rotos

Use tape to attach the 3 cardboard rotors to the egg capsule. Angle the ends of the rotors by bending the cardboard. This will create rotation as the air passes through them.

Test Rotation

Test the rotors will spin the capsule by dropping it from about 8 feet. Adjust the angle of the cardboard rotors if required.
