How to Crochet a Mustache Hat Costume

The orginal idea of this project came from the Hat located at Scandinavian Grace for $135. [This can now be bought on ebay and at thebeardhat.com for about $30.00 now)

This is my version Crocheted. The pattern is what I came up with but the idea belongs to the creator of the original hat Vic Prjonsdottir.

This is a fun and quick project to add to any costume. It also happens to keep you very warm.

You will need to know the basic Crochet Stitches to do this project

Learn To Crochet 101 by Teresa

You will need:
Yarn (I used acrylic redheart 4ply for the maroon hat and 100% wool Lion brand for the Brown one)
J crochet hook
Tapestry needle to sew in ends and sew on mustache

Stitches Used:
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
treble = treble crochet

ch2 does not count as stitch

How to Crochet a Circle

Chain 3

Round 1:
12 dc in second ch from hook, join with a sl st to first dc made, ch 2

Round 2:
2dc in each st around, sl st to first dc made ch 2 (24dc)

Round 3:
1dc in first st, 2 dc in next stitch repeat around, sl st to first dc made, ch2 (36dc)

Round 4:
1dc in first 2 stitches, 2dc in next stitch, repeat around, sl st to first dc made, ch2 (48dc)

Round 5:
1dc in first 3 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat around, sl st to first dc made, ch2 (60dc)

Round 6:
dc in each stitch around, sl st to first dc made, ch2

Rounds 7 - 9:
Repeat row 6

Round 10:
Hdc in each st around, join with a sl st to first hdc made, ch 3

ch 3 counts as first dc

Round 11:
Dc in next 39 stitches, ch 3, turn (40dc)

Rounds 12 - 15:
Dc in each st across, ch 3, turn (40dc)

Rounds 16:
ch 6 then sl st into top of ch3 on opposite side. finish off

Beard
With hat facing you, you will have 6chains connecting the hat.

Count 9stitches right side (mark) and 9stitches left side (mark)

17: Starting on the right side (hat facing you upside down) join with a sl st to 10th stitch, ch2,(does not count as first hdc), hdc in next 9 stitches, hdc in the 6 chains, hdc in next 9 stitches, ch2, turn

18 - 20: hdc in each st across, ch2 turn

21: hdc2tog, hdc in each of the next stitches, hdc2tog in last two stitches, ch2, turn

22: hdc in each st across, ch2, turn (22hdc)

23: hdc2tog, hdc in each of the next stitches, hdc2tog in last two stitches, ch2, turn

24: hdc in each st across, ch2, turn (20hdc)

25: hdc2tog, hdc in each of the next stitches, hdc2tog in last two stitches, ch 2, turn

26: hdc in each st across, ch2, turn (18hdc)

27: hdc2tog, *1hdc, hdc2tog* Repeat across, ch2 , turn

28: hdc2tog, hdc in next 8 stitches, hdc2tog in last two stitches, ch2, turn

29: hdc in each stitch across, ch2, turn

30: hdc2tog across, ch1, turn

31: sc2tog, 1sc, sc2tog in last 2 stitches, ch1, turn

32: *sc2tog, 1sc* repeat across, ch1,

Working in edge sc in each stich around the bottom of the hat. Finish off weave in loose ends

Working in the edge of 'face' sc in each stitch around. Finish off weave in loose ends.

Mustache:
ch 16
(You will be working the following row in each stitch across)
sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next st, dc in next st, 3tr in next stitch, dc next stitch, hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in next st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, 3tr in next stitch, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st.

Working on opposite side of work in the open chains, 2sc in corner, sc in each chain until you get to the Tr stitch, 3hdc opposite tr stitch, sc in each chain until you get to the next Tr stitch, 3hdc in tr, sc to end of mustache. Finish off. Leave a long tail to sew to beard-hat.

Now you that you are finished with the hat and the beard-Mustache you'll need to try it on. How does it fit? Mark on each side where you would like the mustache to 'rest' on your face. Do you have enough room to breath comfortably under your nose?

Good.

Now Sew the Mustache to the beard where you have marked with the tapestry needle and yarn. Secure. Fasten off. Weave in any loose ends.

You're Done!

Look for ways you can improve on this pattern. Instead of adding the beard, leave it as a wig maybe in blue hair?

Instead of adding the mustache maybe you'd like to add a couple of cirlces around the eyes for faux glasses?

How about some more hair? Spikes? dreads?
