How to Crochet a Beanie

IMG_3342.jpeg

This is a guide on how to crochet a beanie. There are many simple crochet stitches used in this guide; these stitches include chaining, single crochets, double crochets, slip stitches, and double crochet two together. You will also need to know how to tie a slip knot. This is a simple design that does not take long to finish and is super fun to complete. This beanie also makes a great gift for your loved ones.

Supplies

  • Bulky yarn
  • 6.5 mm hook
  • 9 mm hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Tie a Slip Knot

Beginning with your yarn and a 6.5 mm hook, tie a slip knot around the crochet hook.

Chain

Once the slip knot is around your hook, chain six times.

Row 1 of the Brim

To begin row 1 of the brim, single crochet into the 2nd chain from the hook, and then single crochet into every chain after that. This means you should single crochet into a chain five times. Once you have finished that, chain once at the end of the piece, and then turn your piece over.

Row 2 of the Brim

To begin row 2, you will need to locate the back loops of the single crochets you just did. When you look at the single crochets, you will notice they make a V shape. The two loops that create this shape are called the back and front loop. The back loop would be the loop that is furthest away from you. For this row, you will single crochet in the back loop only of all the single crochets from the previous row. Once you have done this, chain once at the end and turn the piece over again.

Rows 3-45 of the Brim

For rows 3-45, you will repeat the steps from row 2. This would mean single crochet in the back loop only of the previous row, and then at the end chain once and turn the work over.

Connecting the Brim

At this point, you will have a long rectangle, which is the brim of your hat. The next step is to connect the ends of the brim. To do this, line up the beginning end of the brim with the working end. You should have your crochet hook still in the loop on the working end. When you line them up, insert your hook in the first stitch on the beginning end of the brim, and make sure it is facing the working end. Then insert your hook into the back loop of the first stitch on the working end. Once you have done this, yarn over your hook, and pull through all the loops, including the original loop your hook was in. Do this for all the stitches and your brim will be a connected circle.

Row 1 of the Top of the Beanie

Once you have the brim together, you will begin with the top part of the beanie. To begin, insert a 9 mm hook into the brim, but not in the stitches that are at the very top. Insert your hook into the second stitch from the top, so there will be no holes between the brim and the rest of the beanie. You will single crochet around the brim 45 times, as that is the number of rows the brim has.

Row 2 of the Top of the Beanie

When you begin row two, start with chaining three times. Then you will double-crochet in every single crochet around the hat. At the end of the row, you will do a slip stitch to the top of the chain that you made at the beginning of the row.

Rows 3-6 of the Top of the Beanie

For rows 3-6 of the hat, repeat the steps for row two. When beginning the double crochets, insert the hook into the top of the previous rows double crochets.

Row 7 of the Top of the Beanie

Row 7 will be the first decreasing row. You will again begin by chaining 3 times, and then you will double-crochet the next two stitches together. After that, you will do a double crochet in the next stitch. Follow the pattern of double crocheting two together, then doing a double crochet, until the last stitch where you will do a double crochet. You will then slip stitch into the top of the chain of three from the beginning of the row.

Row 8 of the Top of the Beanie

IMG_3321.jpeg

Row 8 will be the second decreasing row. Again, begin by chaining 3 times. Then double crochet two stitches together around the hat until you get to the last stitch, then double-crochet in that last stitch. Then slip stitch into the top of the beginning chain of three.

Cinching the Top of the Hat

After you have finished row 8, you will cut the string from your ball of yarn, making sure the tail of the yarn is very long. Then, you will thread the tail through your yarn needle. Once that is done you will flip the hat inside out. You will then put the needle through the loop from the last slip stitch and pull the yarn tail to the inside of the circle. Then you will begin a running stitch around the hat, which is just alternating pulling the yarn in and out of the circle in each stitch. Once you have done this pull on the yarn tail to cinch up the hole in the top. Tie a secure knot in the yarn tail close to the cinched circle.

Securing the Top of the Beanie

To make the top extra secure, sew across the hole in a cross pattern. This means insert your needle in the cinched hole going vertically, then pull through the hole across to the other side and pull the needle out of the hole through another stitch. Then insert your needle in a stitch going horizontally across the cinched hole and pull it through and out another stitch on the opposite side.

Finishing Off the Hat

IMG_3342.jpeg

To finish off the hat, you will weave the yarn tail under a few stitches at the top, then cut the excess yarn from the inside of the hat. Do the same with the beginning string of yarn at the bottom of the rim. Then you will have a finished hat!
