How to Crochet a Baby Blanket

Ever get bored when being locked inside your home from the weather or maybe because of the biggest pandemic that’s all over the world? Crocheting is a fun and relaxing project to do while sitting around. The best part about it is being able to relax and watch your favorite movie.

To complete this project, yarn and a crochet hook are all that is needed. Depending on if you’re going to be making a baby blanket or an adult size blanket will determine how much yarn to buy. For this demonstration, I am going to show how to make a baby blanket. For a baby blanket, approximately 400 yards of yarn and a 15mm crochet hook is essential. Depending on the tension, the hook can also be bigger or smaller.

The first thing to do when starting the blanket is to create a slip knot. Wrap the tail end of yarn around your finger and make a cross. Then bring the working yarn which is the yarn that is still attached to the ball around your finger. By then there should be two loops wrapped around the finger. The next step is the bring the back loop over the front loop which then creates a slip knot. You will then take your crochet hook and pull the loop tight to the crochet hook. We are going to start the first row by creating a foundation chain. The foundation of the blanket that I have made consists of 53 chains, and add an additional two chains for turning. To make a chain wrap the working yarn over the hook and pull the slip knot over the loop that is on the hook. Repeat that step until all the chains have been made for the first row. Making sure to not pull too tightly here is very important.

Once the 53 chains are complete, add an additional two chains. The reason we add an additional two is to account for when we turn. This turn is called the “half double crochet.” We’re going to work into the third chain from the hook. Do not count the loop that is on your hook as a chain. To start the next row, wrap the yarn around the hook, and insert the hook into the third chain, wrap the yarn around the hook again and pull through the chain. There should then be three loops on the hook. Then wrap the yarn again and pull through all three loops on that hook and be left with one loop on the hook. Now, to continue that row feel for the next chain and continue to do the same step. Wrap the yarn around the hook, and insert the hook into the next chain, wrap the yarn around the hook again and pull through the chain. Wrap the yarn again and pull through all three loops. Continue to do that all the way until the end of the row.

Now once made to the end of the row, make two additional chains. Then wrap the yarn around, and this time go through the chain but there will be a double chain so the hook will have two loops to pull through instead of just one but it will be the same concept as before, which is wrap yarn, insert hook into next chain, wrap yarn, pull through chain. Wrap yarn again, and pull through all three loops. Once to the end of the row add an additional two chains again and do the same exact pattern all the way through the rest of the blanket.

Finally, when the blanket is as big as desired, and have made it to the very last stitch, wrap the yarn and pull through. Then cut the working yarn and pull the yarn out using the hook and that will create a knot. This is the basics of how to crochet a blanket. There are many patterns out there but this is one that I find the easiest for me.
