How to Created a Privacy Hedge

Privacy hedges come in many shapes and sizes. From those ranging in 5-6 feet in height to towering 45-50 feet, it's up to you what size, type, and variety you choose.
1st Step- Choose What Type Conifer You Want to Use

This was one of our customer's lawns when they first moved into an upscale subdivision. Doesn't look so upscale because #1 it's lack of privacy. We talked with her and offered some good options. The thing this customer wanted more than anything was something that didn't get so large and tall that she couldn't control it. We had plenty of good options for her.
Step #2 - Offer Suggestions According to the Homeowner's Requirements

Golden Privet is a great choice. Its height gets 15 feet and that's a perfect privacy hedge height to maintain and keep up. Hedge trimmers can be used to make the shape the standard square like most homeowner's want.

Step #3 - California Privet, a Darker Conifer of Choice

The California Privet is also another much sought after hedge. Its maximum height is 15 feet and these are evergreen and grow fast. Perfect for a hedge in the midwestern states. It's darker and thicker than the golden privet but both work wonders in a couple growing seasons for much-needed privacy.

Step #4 - Common Regal Privet

The common regal privet is a hardy choice. It stays evergreen year round, is super hardy and works well in southern and southeastern zones. It's also a darker green than the golden privet and grows fast. Height does not exceed 15 feet.

Step #5 - Red Cedar Trees

This homeowner wanted a small border hedge alongside her fence but she wanted a large hedge to border her neighbors with a fence full of noisy dogs. The eastern red cedar tree is a perfect privacy fence and it also keeps down noise because of its thick dense form and it's a year-round evergreen conifer. This type tree is hardy in zones 4-9 and loves to be planted and left alone. The natural habitat for the eastern red cedars is in poor soils and they grow in the wild near rocks.
