Traveling to Florida, it is common to see an alligator like the one on this rock. Alligators are cold blooded. This means that their bodies do not create warmth like humans, and depend on the environment to stay warm.

Making an animal can seem hard at first. To make it easier, lets start big and look for the basic shapes that make the alligator.

Can you find a place for any of these shapes on the alligator?

Using your imagination, find the shapes that best fit using the shapes above. For example, a scaled Paraboloid can be used to make the nose/mouth of the alligator.

Start with the largest shapes, like the head and body, and move toward the smaller shapes, like the limbs and tail. Try to use the least amount of shapes you can, but you can add more if you really need to.

Instructions

  1. Spend 10-15 minutes to find the basic shapes that can be used to make the alligator.
  2. Continue to the next step.

Simplifying Shapes

Take a few minutes and share your drawings with your classmates. Did you come up with a similar result?

Here is one example of shapes that can be used to make an alligator:

There are many different ways to simplify something as complex as an alligator. If you think you came up with a better way to simplify an alligator then use your drawing to build it. Otherwise, lets use the drawing above to make an alligator.
