How to Create a Raspberry

1-1-0.jpg

The following information is a single lesson in a larger Tinkercad project. Check out this and more projects on Tinkercad.

A berry is a seed surrounded by juiced and pulp. One raspberry is made up of several tiny berries. At the base, all of these berries come together. Each raspberry is unique, so to simplify we will have the berries come together as five berries that have the same distance between them.

  1. Place a sphere on the workplane. This will be one berry.
  2. Go to the Edit menu and choose Duplicate. Holding shift to keep the new berry on one axis, move it about 19mm. The two berries should be touching.
  3. These two berries will be rotated together in the following steps. First, lets color the first berry created red.
  4. Select both berries and choose Duplicate from the Edit menu. With the duplicates still selected, rotate them together 72 degrees on the Z axis. *Do you know why we are rotating 72 degrees? (The answer will be at the end)

  5. Delete the berry that is colored green in the image.
  6. Select the last two berries made. Again, duplicate them and rotate 72 degrees as before.
  7. Similar to step 5, Delete the blue berry in between.
  8. Repeat this process until you have 5 red berries that are all 72 degrees from each other. **The answer to the question in step 4** A degree is a unit of rotation, like an inch is a unit of movement. A whole circle has 360 degrees. To have 5 berries equally apart, divide 360 by 5, 360/5=72
  9. Select all five of the berries and scale them down to about 2mm. They will be used later on. Move them off to the side for now.

Create the First Ring

1-2-0.jpg

The following information is a single lesson in a larger Tinkercad project. Check out this and more projects on Tinkercad.

This step will create the first ring at the top of the raspberry, where the berry is attached to the step.

  1. Place a sphere on the workplane.
  2. Holding Shift, scale it down equally to about 7.5mm
  3. Create a duplicate. Holding shift, move the duplicate berry 27mm on the X axis.
  4. This step will be similar to making the base, except this time it will take 12 berries to make a complete circle. 360/12=30. With both berries selected duplicate them and rotate 30 degrees. Keep the berries selected for the next step.

  5. Since 12 is an even number, you do not need to delete any berries. Instead, choose duplicate again under the Edit menu.
  6. As long as the berries are kept selected after duplicating, the duplicate tool will remember how much the berries were rotated. Using the tool again, it will automatically apply the amount to the new duplicates.
  7. Continue using the duplicate tool until the berries make a whole circle.

Use Duplicate to Create the Form

The following information is a single lesson in a larger Tinkercad project. Check out this and more projects on Tinkercad.

In this step, We will combine everything we have learned about the duplicate tool to fill in the rest of the raspberry form, from the top to the base.

  1. In this step we will need to make smaller movements than before. Find Snap grid at the bottom right corner. Click the small black triangle to drop the menu down and select .25mm
  2. Select the whole ring and duplicate it. Move the new ring up on the Z axis 3mm. Keep the new ring selected.
  3. Rotate the same ring 15 degrees so the berries rest in between the berries on the lower ring. Keep the ring selected.
  4. Holding Shift and Alt, scale the ring down, using the top scale handle, until the ring height is 7mm. Keep the ring selected.

  5. Use the duplicate tool to create 3 more rings. The tool will remember the movement, rotation, and scale amounts, and apply them to each duplicate. Keep the current ring selected.
  6. Holding shift and alt, scale the current ring height down to .25mm. Move the ring down .5mm down. Keep the current ring selected.
  7. Continue to use the duplicate tool to create the domed part of the raspberry. Leave an opening to fit the 5 berries made in Step 1. Select all of the berries except the base 5 berries and group them together.
  8. Find the base created in Step 1 and group them together.
  9. Select both groups and use the Align tool found in the Adjust menu.
  10. Align the two groups so they share the same center on the Y and X axis. Position the camera so you can look down the hole to select the base.
  11. Move the base up to fill the hole. Scale the base as needed so there are no gaps.
  12. Group the base and the main raspberry together. Now you have a fresh raspberry ready to print!
