How to Create JOINTS With PINS and HOT GLUE
I was very happy with the result of the instructable that I created (An Ergoman Made Out of Corks): https://www.instructables.com/An-Ergoman-Made-Out-of-Corks/ I still find the idea I had to solve ball joints fascinating, during my studies many times I wanted to make objects with movements and this idea had not occurred to me before.
For this instructable, I wanted to show how I have improved a bit the joints created with this process since I found something that makes them better than in my previous instructable. And I also like the result of this dog, I hope you like it too.
happy making!
Supplies
- Pins
- Glue gun
- Vaseline
- Cutter
- Corks
- Crazy eyes
- Markers and brush
Torso
In my collection of corks, I found one that has a wider part than the rest (as you can see in the image) and it occurred to me that it would be great for the torso, with cutting a little on the sides (where the thighs will go afterward).
Thighs
This is how I created the thighs, you need to create 2 with the last cut as A and 2 with the cut as the B image
Hind Legs
The hind legs and the front legs are very similar, but the difference is in the last cut since in some the cut is inclined forward and in others backward
Front Legs
Head
Mouth
This was probably the most difficult figure to cut as I wanted it to fit perfectly when attached to the head, however, I realized that the cut doesn't need to be that perfect (or curved) as when you use the hot glue it ends up to complement the shape and create the curve to stick it to the head.
Tongue
Ears
Tail
The Face
For the face, what I did was glue the different parts with hot glue and I drew the nose with a marker as shown in the animated gif
The Joints
In this step, happens what in my opinion is the most interesting part of the instructable and it is how I created the ball joints. For these what I did was try to open a hole on the side where I would put the hot glue (where the ball pin would go) and this was what made a big difference from the previous instructable since the joint is better made, it is more concealed in the dog and both the grip of the glue on the cork and the movement of the joint are much better.
so, for the creation of joints:
- I cut the pin to the size I needed it
- I put the pin in one of the pieces
- I put some vaseline on it
- I try to open a small hole in the other piece
- I put hot silicone on it
- I inserted the head of the pin into the silicone
- When the silicone cooled down I started to move it so that it would work as a joint.

Detailed Images of the Joints
These are some detailed images of the joints.
I hope you like this instructable and find it useful not only for making dogs but for ideas you have where you didn't know how to make the joints.
