How to convert a toy quadcopter into a FPV racer

Hi guys,

this is an instructable on how to convert a toy quadcopter into a FPV racer. FPV stands for first person view. Basically, I will show you how to add a camera on a toy quadcopter so that you can control it from the pilot's view point.

I have chosen a very popular toy, the Eachine H8s / JJRC H8. It's price is usually around 12-15 USD.

You will also need an all in one FPV camera (AIO). It's very important that the camera's operating voltage is starting at 3.6 Volt as toy quadcopters are usually powered by a single 3.7V lipo battery. You can find cameras for around 20 USD here or here.

Last but not least you will need a FPV monitor or FPV goggles to receive the transmitted video signal. There are lot of good options out there, you can check out banggood or gearbest.

Besides, you will need

  • a soldering iron and tin,
  • a Phillips screw driver
  • and double sided duct tape.

Have fun!

Remove the Lower Chassis

First, you have to remove the lower chassis:

  1. Remove all the screws on the bottom of the chassis. There are 12 screws (3 screws per arm).
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Gently pull the lower chassis off the frame.

Soldering

Second, you have to solder the camera's 2 power cables on the flight controller of the quadcopter:

  1. Solder the red cable (positive,+) to the B+ joint of the quadcopter's flight controller. It is next to the battery connection port.
  2. Solder the black cable (negative,-) to the B- joint.

Put the Chassis Back Together

Third, put the chassis of your toy quadcopter back together. This is very easy, don't use force. Remember to add the 12 screws! Beware, that you don't squeeze the camera's power cables!

Mount the Camera

Fourth, mount the camera. Use double sided duct tape to mount the camera on top of the toy quadcopter. Make sure that it doesn't hit the rotating propellers. The camera has to face forward.

You Are Finished!

Now you are finished! There are only a few steps left to start flying:

  • Plug in the battery. The camera should automatically turn on and provide a video signal.
  • Make sure that your FPV monitor/goggles use the same frequency as the camera.

Have fun and enjoy your cool FPV racer!
