How to Change Oil
After owning my pickup for 8 months and putting 35,000 miles on it, I have had to do lots of maintenance. After oil has been in a vehicle for so long it gets old and dirty and needs to be refreshed. Changing oil on a vehicle every 5,000 miles is recommended to prevent damage to the motor. I will be showing you how to change oil on a 2017 Chevy Silverado 6.2L.
Supplies
Oil filter required for vehicle (WL 10255), 8 quarts of oil (0W-20), 15mm wrench, filter wrench, drip pan, vehicle
Removing Oil Plug
Underneath the vehicle you will find an oil plug as shown in the video. Put the drip pan under the plug to catch the oil when draining. Use the 15mm wrench to loosen and remove the plug. The oil will drain out of the hole.
Removing Oil Filter
Use the filter wrench to remove the oil filter. The wrench goes around the oil filter and pull the handle to loosen the oil filter. There will be oil in the filter so the drain it in the drip pan then throw it away.
Reinserting Plug
After the oil has stopped flowing out of the plug hole twist the plug back in and use the wrench to tighten it.
New Filter
Get a little bit of oil on a finger and take the new filter and rub the oil on the black rubber seal on the open end of the filter. This creates a seal when tightening. Screw the new filter on where the old filter came off and tighten it with your hand as tight as you can get it.
Adding Oil
Open the hood and on the motor will be a lid for engine oil. Remove lid and dump the 8 quarts of 0W-20 in the hole.
Checking Oil
Start the pickup for 30 seconds then, near where the oil was poured into will be an oil dipstick. This shows how much oil you have in your motor. Pull it out, wipe it off, and put it back in the hole. Pull it out again this time look at the end and there will be a full line or range, the oil should be on the line. If not add another 1/2 quart of oil like in step 5 and repeat steps 6 and 7.
