How to Change an Ignition Coil on Ford 3.0L, 4.0L and 4.2L V6 Engines

1A Auto shows you how to repair, fix, change or replace a broken, misfiring or damaged ignition coil on Ford 3.0L, 4.0L and 4.2L V6 engines. The actual vehicle shown is a 2004 Ford Ranger with a 4.0L V6 engine. You may need to replace your ignition coil if you notice your engine running rough or missing. You will first learn how to remove your existing engine ignition coil, and then install a replacement.

Ok, first we are going to show you how to remove an ignition coil on this vehicle, and the procedure behind that. First, mark the plug wires in a way that will assist you in putting them back on in the correct order. Numbering them in a clockwise fashion starting with the lower right hand plug is an easy way to do this.

Remove the plug wires by squeezing on the lock tabs and pulling up on them until they come off of the coil. Move the wires off to either side of the coil to get them out of the way.

Remove the wiring harness at the back of the coil by pulling up on the tab and then pulling the connector off of the ignition coil.

The ignition coil is held on with two 7mm bolts and two 8mm nuts. Remove these using the sockets and ratchet. You can now pull the coil up and remove it out of the vehicle.

Ok, now that we have shown you how to remove the ignition coil, we are going to show you how to install a new replacement coil. First, place the new ignition coil into position. Secure it with the two 8mm nuts and two 7mm bolts using the sockets and ratchet. There may be a resistor or bracket that goes on with one of the bolts. Make sure you get that into place when securing the nuts and bolts.

Reconnect the wiring harness at the back of the coil and reconnect the plug wires using your marks/numbering to make sure they go back into the same place as before.
