How to Build a Magic the Gathering Commander Deck
This tutorial is to show how you can enter the world of Magic the Gathering and how you can build a commander deck to be able to play one of the three formats for Magic the Gathering. (This is just on how to build a deck and not how to play the game)
Supplies
- Magic cards of varying types (100 in total)
Optional
- Card sleeves (protection for cards)
- Deck box (storage for the finished deck)
Choosing a Commander
To start the deck you should choose a legendary creature that you think could be fun such as the creature shown above who has his abilities shown on the bottom of the card.
Adding Creatures and Planeswalkers
Next, you should find some creatures that have the same theme as your commander and similar colors on the top right of the card. Since the commander of this deck is a dragon most of the creatures in the deck will be dragons. When deciding what planeswalkers to use (like the one in the bottom right) they should have abilities to help improve your deck.
Adding Artifacts, Enchantments, and Spells
These different card types should also follow the same rules as creatures where you will need to pick them based on the colors of your commander and they should help to further your deck such as the ones shown. These however don't have creature themes so they won't have to follow the dragon rule as the creatures did.
Adding Lands
The final step is to add lands to your deck and you should fill your deck up the rest of the way with lands if you had 70 cards including creatures, artifacts, enchantments, or spells you should have 30 lands of varying types like the ones shown in the picture to be able to play your cards. This step is quite important cause without the lands you cannot play the cards in your deck so you want quite a few to be able to play the game.
Have Fun!
With your newly assembled magic deck, you can now enter the world of magic commander and play either with your friends or others in places such as local card shops.
