How to Build: LEGO Soma Cube Puzzle

The Soma Cube Puzzle is a puzzle that involves the combination of a certain set of pieces to build a simple cube. The Soma Cube Puzzle has 240 possible solutions, making it a challenging, yet feasible puzzle to solve. This Instructable is a LEGO interpretation of the Soma Cube Puzzle

Above are the pieces (and counts) required to build each of the 7 pieces of the puzzle.

Note that for tiles, one can use any pieces they have available in order to cover the studs of the bricks, they do not need to use the same pieces as shown above. The builder has to obtain the same shape, not visual.

Understanding Sizing

The Soma Cube Puzzle, is exactly what is sounds like: a cube (in its finished form). However, the standard LEGO brick is not a perfect cube and hence, if you tried to make the puzzle without getting sizing right, the puzzle would fail to work. Therefore, by adding a flat tile(s) to the top of the brick, and a plate to the bottom of the brick, we are able to create a cube shape, resulting in a functional Soma Cube Puzzle.

The following is 1/240 methods to solve the Soma Cube Puzzle, feel free to experiment and develop your own solutions.

Steps:

  1. Place the Long L Piece and the T Piece together.
  2. Place the S Piece vertically in the gap left by the previous step.
  3. Place the L (Short) Piece next to the S Piece (as shown in image)
  4. (In the shape show on image #4) place both the Left side and Right side L pieces on the current structure.
  5. Place the Quarter Pyramid on the gap that remains.

Your Soma Cube Puzzle is now complete.
