By the end of this instructable you will learn the fallowing steps: how to get certified, letting others know your looking for a nanny position, how to go through the interviewing process, what to do after being offered the job, and how to have a successful relationship with the kid/kids.
Getting Certified
Being a nanny isn't just about caring for the kids, it's also about making sure one is prepared for them. Before looking for a nanny position, a candidate should first get certifications. Certifications will make the family feel more comfortable in leaving their children. Some examples are: CPR, First Aid, and a local County Extension Child Care Class.
Putting Your Name Out There
Once one has received the certifications to give a person a leg up over other nannies, it's time to get your name out there! There are various "Nanny Care" agencies that an individual can register with, like Care.com. These agencies will match people in your area looking for a nanny. Also, utilizing social media platforms and posting interest in nannying positions.
Waiting to Be Contacted
Next the candidate will wait to be contacted by a family wanting service. This might be the hardest part. A person can take this time to update a resume and ensure certifications are up to date. There are also numerous websites to assist in preparing the interviewee in the interviewing process.
Chosen for an Interview
The nanny will now be chosen by the family! At this time, the family has selected their candidates for interviewing. This may not be the only family one will interview with. During the interview, bring a resume, cover letter, and references. Remember to be confident, organized, and be yourself!
Offered the Job
Nanny is selected and offered the job! Now it's time to meet the kid/kids being cared for. it's important to make a strong relationship with the kids and get to know them right away, because nannying may feel like being their second mom/dad.
Compromise
Often compromise will be the name of the game, when providing for children. Nannying won't always be easy. Kids can be crabby and throw tantrums if they don't get what they want. It's important to stay calm in these situations and remember there will be more good days than bad.
Following a Schedule and Having Fun
In the role of the nanny, one also must take them to appointments and their extracurriculars. following a schedule will be important. It is wise to carry a planner or use the calendar on a smart phone to keep track of all appointments.
Lastly, just have fun! The kids are looking for safety and routine, however making the days/evening enjoyable is as important for the kids as it is for the nanny.
