  1. Baked and cooled cupcakes (leave them completely cool before frosting)
  2. Buttercream frosting
  3. Plastic piping bag
  4. Scissors
  5. Open or closed star tip (Wilton 1M is the classic choice; my favorite is 2D).
  6. Small offset spatula or knife
  7. Parchment/wax paper for practice

Fill the Piping Bag

  1. Place star tip in plastic piping bag
  2. Use scissors to cut decorating bag at halfway mark on star tip.
  3. Use a spatula or knife to transfer buttercream into the piping bag

**DO NOT OVERFILL!! (2/3 full is preferred)**

Get the Right Hold & Position

  1. Hold the piping bag straight up and down above the cupcake with the tip just above the surface.
  2. Use your dominant hand to apply pressure from the top of the bag, while your other hand guides and steadies it.
  3. Focus on maintaining smooth, even pressure.

**Consistency is more important than speed.**

Start in the Center

  1. Start piping in the center of the cupcake.
  2. Apply steady pressure to create a small dollop of frosting. This will serve as the base for your rosette.

Pipe the Spiral

  1. Apply steady pressure as you move the piping tip in a smooth, circular motion, spiraling outward from the center.
  2. When your rosette reaches the desired size, stop squeezing and lift the tip straight up for a clean finish.
  3. Practice this circular movement on parchment paper until it feels comfortable and consistent.
