If you’re looking at starting your own business, you’re in for a whirlwind of a ride. It’s going to be tough, it’ll stretch your finances and there will be some days where you just want to pack the whole thing in and go back to your old job. This isn’t a task for the faint hearted. It takes commitment, reliance, marketing knowhow and ingenuity. You’ll need all the courage and cash you can muster in order to make it work, but if your idea is good enough and you manage your finances right you could be on to a winner.

Most people start their own business with the dreamy idea of being their own boss, and while this is a great part of running your own business, it is not a reason to pack in your day job and start working for yourself. What you need in an idea, an invention, a revelation or an addition to something that’s already out there on the market. It could be something completely new or an accessory that’s just dying to be invented for a waiting market. Whatever it is, you need to be sure that you have good chance of making it work before you make any drastic moves towards being self-employed and running your own business.

Putting Together a Business Plan

When you’re starting off your business, you need a plan of action as to how you’re going to get your business off the ground and running smoothly. Draft a detailed business plan for you to follow in order give the way your business a direction in which to grow. Look at the possible options open to you and the directions in which your business can grow and weigh up the best route for you.

The more detailed your business plan the better. You’ll need to sort out the big things like setting out your goals for the next five years, as well as the little things like deciding what kind of paper all your printed documents will be printed on. Let no decision get left unanswered, the more detailed your business plan is the less confusion there is when you come to implementing it.

Test, Test, Test and Test Some More

Before you invest any money in your product or service you need to prove that your idea is going to work, and that means doing some testing. You need to make yourself a prototype of your invention or test out your service and make note of improvements that you need to make or things that you can alter to make your final product or service better and more efficient.

You need to be the expert on your own business, all of your business. With everything from the financial forecasting to what your product is made from. If you’re caught short by a bank manager or a potential investor asking you questions about your business that you don’t know the answers to, then you won’t inspire them with confidence.

There is no specific time set for the amount of testing you need to do. You can only stop testing your product or service when you feel that you Have the final product and the right expertise and know how about your business to make it work. Once you have this, then it’s time to get the ball rolling.

Loans & Managing Your Money

Whether you’ve got your own saving to invest into your business or you need a loan from the bank, you’ll need to keep a keen eye on whereabouts your money is going and how it’s performing for you and your business. Managing your money correctly is an essential part of running any business, and since you’ll be in charge, it’s your responsibility to make the budget work every month. You’ll need to factor in every possible expense from the manufacture of your product, its storage and shipping to the tea bags and milk you’ll be using on your break. Leave no stone unturned when it comes to managing the budget for your business because the consequences of poor budgeting could see your grand ideas go up in smoke.

Keep your business and your personal finances separate to make sure you know what money is your own and what money has been designated for the business. The best way to do this is to invest in a business bank account and some financial forecasting software  to keep track of your finances at all times and see where you money is going.

Do not underestimate the time you’ll need to designate towards getting your budget right and figuring out the best rates and prices for the services you will need to employ to get your business off the ground. This will be a vital part in keeping your business running.

Getting online is a huge part of running a business these days, it’s essential for your business to get online and to generate a customer base over the internet who use your products and services. If your business idea already incorporates the use of the internet then this stage will already be obvious - however there are number of businesses that can benefit from online that you wouldn’t normally attribute to going online.

Getting online can really boost your client basis and with the influence of social media on the general public an how they view, follow and share information with businesses ever increasing, it’s more important than ever to get your business online to increase awareness and sales. Connect with your customers through websites like Facebook and Twitter and help grow your fan base across the web to make more sales and to increase awareness about your business.

Where Will Your Business Go?

There are thousands of different options as to where your business will go over the next five years or more. It depends on what kind of business you’re running and how ambitious you are. You can be pretty sure though that if you’ve got a great product or a fantastic service that the public are crying out for, you can be sure that your business will become a success. It won’t happen overnight, it probably won’t happen in the next year or so, it’s a long hard slog running a business. You need to be prepared for a lot of bad days as well as a lot of good days, but that’s’ the risk you take when you start your own business.
