How To: Ruby Slippers

These are instructions on how to make ruby slipper for a Dorothy costume or if you just want to glitter your shoes!

This is easy and not too time-consuming, so have fun!

Supplies

  • One pair of shoes - can be any type of slipper or heel (best if the shoe is smooth though I used a suede style)
  • A container of extra fine red glitter (MUST be extra fine)
  • Craft glue or Mod Podge (ONLY if the shoe is smooth)
  • Adhesive spray (ONLY if shoe is not smooth)
  • Clear enamel spray (Helps the glitter stay on the shoe)
  • Painter's tape
  • Gloves (optional)

Gather Your Materials and Tape Inside of Shoes

Make sure you've got everything I've listed and be sure to have a clean workspace. I put some paper underneath the shoes so I could pour the excess glitter back into the container.

Be careful working in a carpeted area or a place with little nooks and crannies as the extra fine glitter is hard to get out of spaces.

Put the painter's tape inside the shoes so when you glitter and seal it, you won't accidentally seal a bunch of glitter in your shoes that you'll have to scrape out (definitely didn't happen to me or anything).

Apply Adhesive Spray or Craft Glue and Cover With Glitter

The next step is really easy! All you've gotta do is apply either the spray or the glue (depending on what shoe you have (check item list for questions)).

Be sure to add in small increments around the shoe as both the spray and glue both dry pretty fast!

Spray With Clear Enamel Spray

This is probably the most tricky part and I'd recommend wearing gloves, though it's not required. Carefully spray the sealing spray on the shoes outside and leave them out to dry for about a half hour.

It's best to spray when it's not windy and be sure to keep away from pets.

Bask in Your Glittery Shoes!
