How to Make the StratoVulcan Paper Airplane

Fast, long range and versatile, the StratoVulcan is a very capable, simplified variant of the Super Vulcan paper airplane. The StratoVulcan features a smaller, bent wing for easier construction whilst retaining speed and range performance similar to that of its basis.

Materials

Required:
1 Piece of 8.5 by 11 inch Paper
Tape
Pencil
Ruler
Optional:
Scissors (additional surfaces only)

Length and Nose Folding

Fold your paper in half length-wise. Then pull the paper down so that the crease stretches from the fold at the front you just made and the corner of the paper on the other side. Repeat on the other side. Once this is completed, pull the overhanging paper back above the center crease made earlier. Fold the edges of these sections down over the center crease as shown, then pull the triangular tip of the nose back over them.

Wing, Canard and Winglet Folding

Fold the wingtips into the center and crease. Pull the nose to the trailing edge on the airfoil side. Use your ruler to measure back 1 inch from the resulting crease, then make another mark. After this is done, pull the nose back forward, stopping and creasing at the 1 inch mark you have just made. Fold the aircraft up in half, then fold the canards down. Proceed to then fold the wings down so that the folds in the middle of the wing are aligned with the bottom of the fuselage when folded. Unfold the wings, then fold the wingtips into these folds as shown and crease, then unfold.

Taping

Apply tape to the nose above and below the canard, as well as to the LERX-wing joint. Then apply tape to the rear of the fuselage and over the wing root near the trailing edge. Once this has been done, apply tape to the canard folds to secure them to the fuselage. This will complete your StratoVulcan.

Flight

The StratoVulcan is a quite fast but forgiving airplane, just as the comparable Super Vulcan was. The StratoVulcan can be launched at (slightly) negative, neutral or positive attitudes at moderate to high speeds. Additional applicable surfaces include flaps, elevators, ailerons, slats, flaperons, elevons, rudders, air brakes, canard trim and an "electronic warfare" tail. Enjoy!
