How to Make Eggs in a Basket

Do you like Eggs?
Do you like Toast?
If you answered yes to these questions then Eggs in a basket are for you.  This super simple breakfast treat can look quite fancy if made with fancy bread.  I can't remember where I learned how to make Eggs in a Basket but I do remember seeing them in V for Vendetta.

Ingredients and Tools

Ingredients :
•Eggs (as many as you want)
•Fancy Bread (enough for one slice per egg)
•Butter
•Salt & Pepper not pictured
Tools:
•Animal Totem (optional)
•Bread Knife
•Shot Glass (for cutting)
•Awesome Spatula (or any old spatula if you don't have an awesome one)
•Cutting Board
•Frying Pan (not shown)
•Fire (also not shown)

Fancy Bread Prep

If you are not into fancy bread you can just take a slice out of a bag and skip the first part of this step.

Using the bread knife cut off 1 inch slices of fancy bread. That is 2.54 cm for all those using the metric system.  Make as many slices of bread as eggs you decided to cook.

Next using your shot glass press the open end of the shot glass down on the center of a slice of bread to create a hole in the center.  Then remove the hunk of bread from the shot glass and set it aside if you want to toast it in the pan as well or sneak a prebrunch snack.

Completely Optional Step: Operation Bread Goggles

Hold fancy bread slices up to your eyes like goggles.
Like I said completely optional but it will get a laugh from your photographer.

Playing With Fire

Turn your stove to medium high heat.  Toss a small pad of butter and spread it around as it melts to cover your pan.  This will keep your eggs from sticking it will also taste great.

Let the butter foam up.  Once the bubbling slows down toss in your beloved bread goggles for the time for giggling has passed and the time for eggs in a basket is upon us.

The Egg Drop

Use whatever technique you prefer to crack an egg and open it into the hole and repeat for the number of baskets you have.  For me this was two.

Make sure your animal totem is there protecting you from broken yokes and egg shell bits.

Now is the time to add a salt and pepper to taste.

The Flip

Once you can see the bottom of your egg is starting to firm up slip your awesome spatula under the egg in the basket and flip it over.

Now it is important to note I like my eggs a bit runny.  If you like firm eggs once you have flipped the eggs place a lid on you frying pan.

If I have not eaten the little bread rounds now is the time to add them to the pan to toast.

Plate and Enjoy

Once the eggs have achieved your preferred level of firmness use your spatula to pick them up and slide them onto your plate.
Grab your fork and dig in time to enjoy your hard work.  Don't forget to thank your animal totem.
