How to Make a Rubber Band Car

If you have a school project, then this will probably make you the winner! This can even carry a size 5 soccer ball over 7 feet! This is my entry for the Make it Youth Contest. I hope this helps any other young builders out there. Along the way I learned that cardboard, with the right supports, can be really strong. I also learned that one rubber band will get your pretty far!

Parts and Tools!

Parts: cardboard
Wooden wheels
Two rubber bands
Wall picture frame hook
Popsicle sticks
Wooden axles
2 CD's (wheels)

Tools: hot glue gun
Razor blade
Scissors
Ruler
Pencil

Cutting and Gluing!

Cut 6 pieces of cardboard. Each piece needs to have a 1 inch width and needs to be 12 inches long.

Gluing!

Now glue 3 of the 6 pieces together to form a firm support frame. Do this twice.

Poke the Holes!

Now poke two holes in each side frame piece. Each hole should be slightly larger than your wooden axles diameter.

Top Piece

Now get more cardboard and cut a rectangle. The length needs to be 7 1/4 inches and the width needs to be 5 1/2 inches.

Gluing Again!

After you have cut out the top piece, glue it on the side frames.

Add Support

Now add support to the frame by adding two popsicle sticks to each side.

Axles!

Poke the axles through the holes in the side frames.

Glueing Again!

Now hot glue the wheels on to the axels. Make sure they fit on tight.

The Hook

Glue the hook to the end farthest away from the CD wheels.

Apply the Rubber Band

Add the rubber band to the back axel and then hook it on the hook. Wind up and let it go!
