In this video I'll show you how to look up the meaning of automotive diagnostic trouble codes using an online database.  I got an Autoxray Code Scout 700 as a Christmas present one year and I have definitely made good use of it.  That is the tool I use to read my diagnostic trouble codes when the check engine light comes on in my car.  The official name for this tool is an OBD-II code scanner.  Vehicles manufactured after 1996 require an OBD-II code scanner to read the trouble codes.  Vehicles manufactured from 1986 - 1995 require an OBD-I code scanner to read the trouble codes.  Once you are able to read the trouble codes you'll need to look up what they mean.  Autoxray has a helpful online data base called the Code Look Up.  Once you know the codes you can find out what they mean by filling out some basic information about the make and model of your vehicle.  All you will need is a code scanner, a computer with internet access and a paper & pencil.  If you don't know how to use a code scanner please refer to this video tutorial that covers How To Read & Clear A Check Engine Light.
