In this instructable I will show you how to get an unlimited amount of DS games for the price of $20-$30. All you will need is an R4 chip (which I will explain what it is and how to obtain it), a Micro SD card (comes with the R4, although if you want more games, buy a bigger one), a Micro SD to Usb adaptor (unless you have a computer with a port for a Micro SD card), and a 3DS. For you DS game lovers, this is probably a dream come true.

The Ultimate Tool: R4

The R4 is a chip which looks like your average DS chip, but instead can have more than 100 DS games on it! However, you will not be able to buy this in America unless you get it from some bidding website such as E-Bay. I have recently got mine and am traveling for the summer and that is how I got mine. So if you can't travel or get one on E-Bay, sorry. So with the R4 you can get any DS game with cheats and real-time save. So how to use one. The R4 uses a micro SD card to save all the games onto it, so the bigger the SD, the more games. Usually, if you go to a game store, like GameStop or EBGames, they would charge you $5 for every game. However, if you can not find the firmware, I would suggest going to them to let them download it for you. If you do buy a new SD card, for space purposes or if you lost your other one, I will teach you how to download the firmware.

Firmware Download

To download the firmware, you will need to use your card reader, the Micro SD to USB adaptor. Insert your SD card into the adaptor and put the adaptor into your computer. For Mac computers/laptops, it is just drag and drop. Windows probably has the same thing. Next go to: http://www.r4i-sdhc.com/downloade.asp. If you scroll down a bit, you'll see boxes with names of languages of them. These are the latest firmware for that language. So if you speak English, simply click on the English one, and you will begin the download. After the download finishes, there should be a folder called R4i-3DS V1. Next, open up your SD cards files, where there should be none. Drag that folder into the SD cards files. Open the folder, and you should see three things: a moonmemo folder, a moonshl2 folder, a file called R4.dat, and a folder called R4imenu. Take out all four of these and put them into the SD card but not in the R41-3DS V1 folder.

Time for the Micro SD to USB Adaptor

This is where the adaptor comes in handy. To download games onto your R4, or technically, the micro SD card, you're going to need a computer or laptop to download from. And if you're laptop doesn't have a port for a micro SD, what're we going to do? Hurray for adaptors. The adaptor has ports for usually three different SD cards, including micro. So, put the micro SD card into the adaptor, and then put the usb cable into your computer. The adaptor basically works as a reader for the micro SD to the computer. I use a Mac laptop to do my downloads, so I don't really know how it works on a Windows, but it might be the same. For Mac, go onto Finder, where you can see the micro SD. It will probably be called untitled or no name. I renamed mine to R4, but you can name it whatever you want. Anyways, if you click on the micro SD, you will see files of all the games you have on it, and the save sheets. MAKE SURE TO NEVER DELETE THE SAVE SHEETS UNLESS YOU ARE DELETING THE GAME. The save sheets have your save files on them, so no save sheets, no save files. So now you are going to need a place to download your games from. The best place I have seen so far is www.romulation.net. They have all the NDS, Gameboy, and tons of other systems games. But for the R4, you can only get DS games and Gameboy games, do not try to download PS1 games on it. So next search up any game you want, and find it. Look at the regions, because if you only speak English, then make sure the game has an American flag next to it. Click on the game and you will be brought to another page with a download now button. Download the game. After the game has been downloaded, double click the file and extract it to the desktop. Normally you won't be able to extract the .rar file, so you need to download a file opener from the app store. I recommend The Unarchiver, as it is free and works perfectly. After extracting the file, go to Finder > Desktop > and look for the file. After you find the file, hold it and drag it to the micro SD card. After the file has finished copying, the game has been successfully loaded onto the micro card. Now eject the adaptor and you can take out your SD card. Put it back into your R4 chip and put the R4 chip into your 3DS. Usually the game shows up in the home menu as Touch! Bomerman Land, but that doesn't really matter. Anyway, when you open the R4, and press Game, you should now see the new game(s) you have downloaded.
