For this activity, only five items are needed; Parchment paper, baking soda, cornstarch, water and measuring cups. Food coloring is optional, but it is a great way to incorporate colors into your child's play.

Heating the Mixture

Start by turning the heat onto medium. Then you are going to place 1 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup cornstarch and 1 cup of water into a medium saucepan. Then you are going to stir it continuously until it becomes a dough like texture.

Parchment Paper

Once the dough is done you are going to take the pan off the burner and let it cool for about five minutes, while preparing for the next step. The next step is to place down some parchment paper. Find a flat surface and place it there. Once that is complete, take your dough and place it onto the parchment paper.

Kneading the Dough

Knead the dough together and once you have completely kneaded it together then you are going to take your knife and cut as many sections as you want based on the number of food coloring you have.

Adding Food Coloring

Now that the dough has been cut into sections, it is time to add the food coloring. Put some gloves on to prevent staining of your hands. Then place each color of your food coloring onto the sections.
