How Small Is an Atom

IMG_4254.JPG

•Atoms are only visible under microscopes and big magnification even though everything around us consists of atoms therefore in this experiment we can understand atoms using other senses like smelling.

Background Information

IMG_1371.JPG

•Every piece of matter consists of small atoms. In fact,so small that without being able to be visible it can exit a tied balloon. My prediction is that the perfume atoms will be able to exit the balloon and I will be able to smell it in the box.

Research Question

IMG_3167.JPG

•What is the actual size of atoms and to what extent are they small?

Hypothesis

IMG_5526.JPG

•If we leave the atoms of perfume inside the balloon for 30 mins then it is possible for some of the atoms to exit the balloon and spread into to box because of how small the atoms are.

Variables

IMG_1070.JPG

•Independent : The amount of air in the balloon

•Dependent : The amount of perfume

•Controlled: The box

Steps

1.Measure 20 ml of perfume

2.Put the perfume into the balloon

3.Put into the balloon air

4.Tie the balloon tightly

5.Put the balloon inside the box

6.Set the timer for 30 mins

7.Open the box

8.Smell the scent of perfume in the box

Data

Time passed since putting the balloon In the box to Ability to smell the perfume

10 mins : Little to no smell

20 mins Able to smell perfume but not clear

30 mins: Clear and heavy smell

Pattern

•As the amount of time the atoms spent in the balloon increased the smell inside of the box increased also.

Evaluation of the Hypothesis

The atoms of the perfume spread inside the balloon and after time exits the balloon and spreads into the box and therefore my hypothesis was right in saying that the atoms were small enough to exit the balloon and spread into the box.

Evaluation of My Method

•It was a Home done experiment that could have been done in a more cared for way even though it was successful I could have measured the perfume more precisely in order to be 100% sure amount used in the balloon.
