How I Wrapped My Knife Handle With Twine

Materials

Twine

Clothing dye (optional)

Epoxy

Tape

Toothpicks

Utility knife

Spray varnish

 

1. For this knife I colored the white nylon twine.  I measured the amount of twine I needed, and burnt the ends to stop I from unraveling.

 

2. I then boiled water in a stainless steel pot and stirred in my clothing dye until I got the color I wanted, dropped in the twine and let it simmer for 30 minutes stirring occasionally.

 

3. I strained the twine in a colander, and rinsed it starting with warm water slowly decreasing the rise until I was only using cold water, until no more dye was bleeding.

 

4. I washed the twine in dish liquid, rinsed it and let it dry.

 

Now to wrap the handle.

 

1. I glued the string in place on the bottom side of the handle ( where I wanted it to start) with epoxy and taped it in place until the glue set.

 

2. Trim off the end of the twine with a utility knife (it will not unravel because of the glue)

 

3. Start wrapping the handle keep it tight as you go, and occasionally pushing the twine tight against the previous wrap so you cannot see any of the wood. (It helps if you color the handle the same color of the twine to make the wood less obvious).

 

4. Once you reach where you want the wrapping to stop, tape it in place, and mix up more epoxy. Using a tooth pick glue the end of the twine down.

 

5. When the glue sets, trim of the end with your utility knife.

 

6. Use spray varnish  and coat the twine with a couple of coats and your finished.
