How I Made This Metal Toucan
I have a small collection of stone toucans. They sit in my windowsill and are admired by everyone who passes by and I thought what would be a better idea than to make one and put it in the windowsill and say “hey, I made that”. So in this tutorial I will show you how to make a small statue of a toucan.
Supplies
Pliers
something to make a small indentation
A small file/sandpaper
Scrap metal
Crucible
Torch
and some clay
Making the Mold
For the step, you will take your figure and press it into the clay. Make sure you catch all the details.
Melting
Now you will ignite your torch and melt your metal.(I did the step off camera) Be sure not to accidentally pour the metal on you or on anything else that might catch fire or harm someone.
Pouring
Make sure not to overpour or leave any cracks in the mold for the metal to leak into. Mine looked kinda like a puffin, but whatever.
Sanding
For this step you’re gonna need the pliers, sandpaper or file and a small tool to make an indent. Use the pliers to cut off any visible excess metal. Use the small tool to indent for the eyes and use the file to file down any rough spots.
Final Thoughts
I’m sure there’s a better molding clay that will do better than the one I have but overall it turned out really well. I didn’t actually use a lighter as my torch but, off camera I have a small butane torch that I used for melting the metal. For my metal I used some scrap metal that I got from a thrift store. That’s all for this instructables. Thanks for stopping by.
