Hot Wheels Organization

So, I'm a big kid at heart and I'm not too proud to admit I still collect Hot Wheels. It's the best part of agreeing to go to the grocery store.

While I'm partial to Mopars and hot rods, I think we can all admit Hot Wheels can be hard to store efficiently especially if you keep them in the package.

So one day, I decided to clean up the mess (I swear it wasn't totally my wife's idea). Anyway, back on topic. This instructable will show you how to make a killer How Wheels display shelf out of one sheet of 1/4" thick sheet of plywood.

Tools:

1. Table saw, mine is a portable ryobi or you could use a skill saw with a guide

2. Tape measure

3. Clamps

4. Brad Nailer with 5/8 18 gauge brads or hammer, nails and nail set

5. Counter-sink bit

6. Level (for mounting)

Supplies:

1. 4 X 8 sheet of 1/4" finished plywood if you can get a half sheet 2 X 8 sheet you would be OK

2. Wood Glue

3. Brads 5/8 18 gauge

4. 4 or 8 countersunk drywall screws

4. A sunny disposition

So cut your plywood sheet down to size.

Cut list (quantity / length / width ):

• 3 / 8' / 1 1/2"
• 2 / 8' / 1"
• 1 / 8' / 1/2"
• 1 / 8' / 11 1/2"
• 2 / 4 1/2" / 1/2"

Mark-up:

Basically you only need to mark:

• The middle of base board (11 1/2" wide)
• The middle of the 8'/1/2" board
• The middle of one of the 1 1/2" board.

This helps you with the glue-ups, but I did mark-up everything when I was designing this.

Glue down the pieces in the order below by applying a 1/16" bead of glue the length of one side of the boards:

1. Orange, make sure to align the middle marks on the middle board
2. Add weight or clamps to hold down for 10 minutes
3. Add glue to the top of the orange boards and set the read boards on top as shown in the pictures (remember the middle mark
4. Clamp for 5 minutes and then shoot some brads into the boards about every 10 inches
5. Add the glue to the 4 1/2" pieces and slide into each end and add brads in the corners

Let it drive for about a day and you have a Hot Wheels shelf.

If you don't want it 8 feet tall, I added 2 more 4 1/2 pieces to the other end and used my saw to cut it in half making 2.

Drill a counter-sunk hole in the corners (4 for each rack) and get out the level when you mount it.

Mines on the back of the closet door. My wife says it hides the shame nicely.
