Hot Dog Noodle Casserole
My wife was craving this dish the other day, but couldn't remember how to make it and couldn't find anything similar on the internet. I called up my mother in law and she gave me the recipe. The simplicity of it made things nice and in the end made for a happy wife.
This is a very simple and quick recipe to shake things up when it comes to pasta dishes. It's also very noticeable from the title that this is an American dish, certainly not Italian.
This recipe usually makes enough food for about 4 people.
This recipe takes about 15 minutes to make (if that).
Ingredients you'll Need:
Here is a list of ingredients and quantities that you will need:
8 hot dogs
2 Tablespoons Vinegar
2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 Teaspoon Salt
1/2 Teaspoon Black Pepper
1/4 Teaspoon Chili Powder
1 can of tomato sauce (8 oz.)
1 medium sized onion or 1/2 Tablespoon dried minced onion
1/2 Tablespoon Butter (optional)
1 pound Macaroni pasta (or really any kind that you'd like or have available)
And that's it!
Just like any good pasta, you need to put some water in your pot and get it heated up to a boiling point. It would be a good idea to get that started at this stage. You can add salt to the water, but if you do, be sure to decrease the amount of salt mentioned in the list of ingredients.
Once the water starts to boil, put the pasta into the water. Stir occasionally. You will also want to take your 8 hot dogs and slice them into roughly 1/4" pieces. (It's not an exact science, so don't worry if it's bigger or smaller). Put the hot dog pieces into the boiling water with your pasta. (If for some reason you are morally opposed to cooking hot dogs with your pasta then you can boil them in a separate pot.)
Start out by chopping up the onion. Place the onion and the butter in a pan on medium heat. If you decided that you didn't want to use butter then you can use margarine or a little bit of oil to keep the onion from burning. Fry the onion until it starts to turn clear (right before the onion caramelizes).
Open the can of tomato sauce and add it to the pan with the onion.
Measure out the Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, black pepper, chili powder, and salt and add them into the pan with the tomato sauce. Stir occasionally.
Once your pasta has reached a satisfactory state, for me that means it's just past al dente, drain the pasta water. Combine the pasta and hot dogs with the tomato sauce. Mix the tomato sauce, the pasta, and the hot dogs together.
You're ready to enjoy your new pasta dish. It's recommended that you eat it while it's warm (I think that it tastes better). You can add parmigiana cheese for an additional taste if you wish.
Buon Appetito!
When I made this I used a little bit of margarine, and used dried onion flakes to help speed up the process. My wife commented that she didn't want it quite as spicy this time either so I only used about 1/8 Teaspoon chili powder and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. The end idea, according to my wife, is that you have just enough pasta sauce to cover the pasta; you don't want excess. I personally think that it would taste a bit better if there was a bit more pasta sauce.
