Hot Cuban Roast Sandwich
This sandwich recipe is inspired by the classic Cubano. Each ingredient of this sandwich fits so well together creating a mouth-watering and delicious taste. It is made with a slow cooked pork roast, melted Swiss cheese, zesty dill pickles, and mustard sandwiched between pita bread and fried in butter over the stove top. You gotta try this sandwich.
Rub on the Seasoning
- 1 T dried parsley
- 1 T dried oregano
- 1 T minced garlic
- 2 tsp onion powder
- 2 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp salt
In a small bowl, mix together all of the listed seasoning ingredients. Rub this seasoning mixture all over a 3 to 4 lb boneless pork roast and place in a slow cooker.
Slow Cooking the Roast
- 1 orange, quartered
- 1 lime, quartered
- 1 onion, quartered
Cover the roast and cook on low for 7 to 9 hours. When the roast has an hour left to cook, add in the listed ingredients. Give the fruit a squeeze before adding to the slow cooker.
Assembling the Sandwich
Once the roast has finished cooking, you can assemble the sandwich. Start with squeezing mustard over a slice of pita bread. Add a slice or two of Swiss cheese to cover one half of the pita bread. You can either shred or slice the roast then place it on top of the Swiss. Finally, lay a sliced dill pickle on top and fold the pita bread in half to make a sandwich.
Fry It and Serve Hot
Melt a pat of butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Once melted, press the sandwich into the frying pan with the back of a spatula. Allow to fry for a minute, then flip the sandwich over to fry the other side. This gives the bread a slightly crisp outer layer.
The Hot Cuban Roast Sandwich is ready to slide onto a plate along with a pile of fries - enjoy!
