Homemade E-reader Cover.

This cover is great for e-readers like Nook and Kindle. It also worked well with my Tablet. 

The first step is to find a book that you can use the cover off of. This was one that my daughter had already succeeded in ripping out many of the pages.

I used a sharp knife to remove the rest of the pages from the cover.

Lay the book out on your fabric of choice and cut around it leaving about an inch on all sides to make sure you have enough space for seams. Cut two.

Cut another piece of fabric that is as wide as one side and twice as long. Again make sure you leave about 1 inch extra all around. Cut two.

I cut the elastic straps off a bra that had been previously re-purposed in another project. The elastic will be used later to create the corner elastic that holds the e-reader in the cover.

Using a sharp pair of sicsors, cut the spine out of the cover so you only have the two hard cover pieces.

Lay the two pieces of cover in the center of the fabric(wrong side out with right sides together) with about 1/2 inch between. Mark the sides and corners.

Sew a seam around three of the outer sides (Left, bottom, and right) making sure to back-stitch at the beginning and end.

Turn right-side-out and iron flat.

Insert cover pieces and push to the sides making sure to get them all the way to the edges. Use pins to mark where the inside edge of the cover comes to. Remove cover pieces and sew a seam on each side to create pockets that the cover pieces will eventually be sewn into.

With right sides together, place the pocket pieces on the cover and decide how far up you want the pocket to come. Mark it and sew a seam all the way around making sure to leave a small place un-sewn  so that you can turn it right side out.

Turn pocket piece right-side-out and iron flat. Tuck in the raw edges from the space you left before you press so that it is easier to sew over later.

Pin the pocket and elastic strips to the cover making sure to line up the edges of each with the edges of the cover.

Sew around the left, bottom, and right sides of the cover creating a top stitch as you sew on your pocket and elastic. As you go, make sure you are back-stitching at the corner of the pocket and over all the ends of elastic. Sew a seam down the inside side of the pocket and the two inside ends of elastic. DO NOT sew the top ends of elastic yet because you will not be able to slip in the cover pieces.

Slip in the cover pieces. They may fit a little tight, but carefully push them in. Fold in the raw edges of fabric at the top and press flat. Sew a seam across the top being careful to go along the top edge of the cover pieces. Back- stitch at both ends and back stitch over the last two elastic ends. 

Trim any thread ends and any extra elastic.

You can insert your e-reader (or small tablet) in the pocket or in the elastic while you are using it. 

I think this turned out awesome, especially when I think about the $50-$100 I saved by not buying one.
