Hey!

I am introducing you a way to make your own unique home sign.

First I want to tell that I am not a professional woodworker. I am a beginner and this is my first project, so if you feel like you have no experience with woodworking then it is not a problem and do not let it stop you! It is suitable for beginners and I am a good example!

All You Will Need

All you need:

  • Scroll saw
  • Small Paintbrush
  • Wire and a screw for hanging
  • Linseed oil
  • Paint
  • Engraving chisels
  • Sandpaper
  • Pencil
  • Pice of wood

Drawing the Shape

The first step is to find piece of wood and draw the shape on it. I did tree shape but you can do whatever you feel suitable for your home.

Cutting the Shape Out

Now it is time to cut the shape out. I am using a scroll saw for this which is quite easy to use. You just have to remember to not pull the blade right or left while sawing! It may break the blade and your work stops there.

The Writing

It is time to grab a pencil and think big! Write whatever you want. It is very useful to make a draft drawing before actually engraving on the wood.

Engarving

Time to take out the engraving chisels and engrave over your writing.

Painting

Painting time! Take your favorite color and paint on your engraved writing. Do not worry if you get the paint outside the letters, you gonna sand the whole sign after the color has dried. Any type of power sander will make the work go faster but regular sandpaper will work just as well.

Let it dry for some time when done. I used fast drying paint, so I waited just a few minutes. Also, it is possible to speed up the process by using a hairdryer!

Sanding

Use sandpaper to remove all the paint that is not in the grooves.

Overing With Oil

Cover everything with linseed oil. It protects the wood and brings forth its beauty.

Finishing With a Screw

Now just add a screw on the other side of the sign and attach a small wire for hanging.

It Is Ready!
