Homemade Wind Vane
Air is something we feel and breathe every day, but we do not usually see it. This is why I decided to make it visible today, more specifically, the wind. As an experienced sailor who competed at the highest National level, understanding and visualizing the wind is crucial to be successful at races. Therefore, we use wind vanes made fully out of plastic (metal ones can be used in bigger boats) to be able to tell fast and easy the direction where the wind is coming from. Wind vanes are not very common to see in our every day life, for that reason, I decided to share this simple 4-step 3-material homemade idea that can be made by anyone in a matter of a few minutes. When you are done making it, you can test it outside on a windy day, it can be useful when you are playing outdoor sports such as ultimate frisbee, golf or even soccer. This will help you have a better visualization of the direction where the wind is blowing to and from, since where the string is pointing is where the wind is blowing towards, and the opposite side is the direction it is coming from. Now without further ado, let's move on to the supplies and steps.
Supplies
- Any sort of hard stick;
- Hot glue or a strong one;
- Any piece of string, light enough to move freely when you blow.
- A fan (optional)
Gather Your Materials
Find all material needed and gather them.
Trim the String
If your piece of string is too long to the point it is quite heavy and hard to move when you blow it, trim it down to a size where it is not too short and is light enough to easily move when blown at.
Glue the String to the Stick
Apply glue to the top of your stick and attach any of the two ends of the string on the glue.
Let It Dry and Test
Let the glue dry and then point the fan at it to test, or you can just blow it yourself.
