Homemade Spiral Potato Cutter
In the new Instructable I show you how to make a spiral potato cutter at home from reused materials. It's been a while since my last project and I've been itching to pick up the instructable making again. As you know, I prefer to do this in the form of a video so that's also included! In terms of project it wasn't a difficult choice, I love spiral potatoes and use this homemade tool for this a lot, I'd like to share this with you!
Supplies
The materials you need to make this project are almost all recycled. This is what you need:
- Soda bottle
- Can
- Threaded rod
- 2 screws
I bought the threaded rod, the rest is recycled. Instead of the threaded rod, you can of course also use another rod that is recycled.
Preparing the Can
The first step is to prepare the can. Remove the label from the can and wash the can thoroughly. Drill 2 holes of 8 millimeters in the closed side of the can. One hole exactly in the middle, the other hole on the side. Now draw a line between the 2 holes and cut it out with the grinding wheel.
Then use a file to make the cutting edge really sharp.
Preparing the Bottle
Step 2 is preparing the bottle. It doesn't matter what brand of bottle you use as long as the diameter is slightly larger than the can. We'll use the cap in the next step. Use a Stanley knife to cut 10 centimeters off the bottom of the bottle. Place it over the can and use the heat gun to shrink the plastic so that it fits snugly over the bottle. Then cut the bottle at 3 points so that you can remove it from the can and click it back on. Finally, for this step, drill an 8 millimeter hole in the middle of the bottom of the bottle.
Preparing the Threaded Rod
The threaded rod is used to skewer the potato and turn it around. For this, it must first be prepared. The length is determined by the length of the can + the longest potato + 2 x 8 centimeters (for the handle).
Mark 2 x 8 centimeters and bend the threaded rod 90 degrees at these points. I used a baco to bend the threaded rod.
Then make the end of the long side pointed so that it can be easily pushed through the potato.
We are going to use the cap of the soda bottle to secure the potato to the skewer. This will ensure that it rotates well while making the spiral potato.
Drill 3 holes in the cap of 2 millimeters. Drill the middle hole to 8 millimeters so that the threaded rod fits through it. A short screw goes in the outer 2 holes. Use a Stanley knife to cut a small piece out of the side of the cap so that the threaded rod can lie flat in the cap. Secure the whole thing with hot glue.
Time to test! Put a potato on the threaded rod and tighten it well on the 2 screws. Put the threaded rod through the can and the bottom of the bottle and turn the potato around while putting a little pressure on it. In the video you can see how well this works! The potato is cut and ends up in the can. Take the potato out and put it on a stick, your spiral potato is ready, enjoy!
