Homemade Pop Pop Crackers

In this Instructable, I'll show you how to make your own Pop Pop Crackers. On the internet I came across several projects in which they make pop pop crackers but it didn't seem to work or they used materials that not everyone has at home.

The idea of using matches has come up before. These were then wrapped in paper with a little scraping off the striking surface. I tried to make these but they did not work or hardly worked, there was simply not enough mass. By adding small pieces of stone I managed to create more mass so that the Pop Pop Crackers now work well.

The match head is typically composed of 45-55% potassium chlorate with a little sulfur and starch. The safety matches ignite at striking surface due to the extreme reactivity of red phosphorous with potassium chlorate. Instead of striking it manually, the friction in the pop pop crackers is created by the force released when they hit the ground.

Start by removing the heads from the matches with the pliers. By squeezing them a little, they break and fall off into pieces. Collect the pieces in the matchbox.

Now take the outer box of the matches and a hobby knife (another sharp knife will probably do too). Gently scrape off small pieces of the striking surface. Also collect these pieces in the container.

Stones

Now take the small stones and add them to the mixture from steps 1 and 2. Take care not to add too many stones. 3 or 4 small stones per cracker should be sufficient. When the stones have been added, mix well once.

Get a piece of scrap paper (about 5 by 5 centimetres). Add a little bit of the prepared mixture.Fold the scrap paper around the mixture. Then roll the paper to a point to seal it.
