Homemade Lanyard

In this tutorial, I will be describing how to make 2 different types on lanyards: on that goes around the neck and one for around your wrist. This is super simple to make and can be made with fabric scraps and a leftover lanyard (or free ones you can find at campus events).

Supplies

2 Long strips of fabric 1.5-2 inches wide

D-Ring, swivel snap hook optional, or keyring (will not lay as nicely)

Cut Fabric Strips

For long, around the neck lanyards, you will need 2 2x38 inch strips of fabric. The Pictured is 1.5x38 inch strips which is a little harder but still doable.

For short, around the wrist lanyards, you will need 2 2x14 inch strips of fabric.

Pinning and Ironing

Fold the outside edges into the middle, right side facing out. This will look like bias tape. Pin and iron flat, then remove pins. This strip will be 0.75-1 inch thick, make sure it is slightly smaller than the flat side of the D-ring (test by weaving through the ring). Do to both strips. Now pin strips to each other, folded sides touching and flat sides facing out.

Sew each side with a ⅛ seam allowance. Cut ends if jagged for a cleaner look.

Adding It All Together

Fold in half and make the raw edges touch, make one slightly longer, fold it over the other’s edge, insert D-ring, fold over again.

For the longer/neck lanyard, the top will loop around and not perfectly folded in half. Picture below.

For the short/wrist lanyard, this will be folded in half, flat.

Finishing Touches

Hold all of the folds down, lift the presser foot, line the top edge of the folded fabric with the presser foot (⅛ inch seam), let down presser foot. For ease, start stitch in the middle and sew back and forth; you may also increase stitch length.

All Finished!

All finished! Now you can add keycards, car keys, I.D.'s, ect.!
