Homemade Glitter: a Tutorial

Glitter! It's elemental to arts and crafts, so why not make your own unique glitter from recycled materials!? Here how!!

YOU WILL NEED:

Kitchen shears (though tin snips may also suffice)

Safety Goggles

Large food storage container with a lid

Blender (Will no longer be suitable for food preparation)

CD's and or DVD's (The color of your discs will determine the color of your glitter. I recommend using old blank disc since they are usually shiny on both sides)

A sifter or colander (both may come in handy depending on how fine you want your glitter to be)

Start by cutting your DVD/CD's in half using the kitchen shears. Place several broken pieces into your blender and place on the lid. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE THE LID IS ON. I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE GLITTERY MASSACRE THAT WILL BEFALL YOUR HOME SHOULD YOU NOT TAKE THIS PRECAUTION. Make sure one hand is keeping the lid from flying off and turn on the blender with the other. You can simply run it for a minute or less, or try the "Pulse" button if your blender has one.

Once a good portion of the discs are blender, carefully remove the lid and gently pour the contents into the sifter or colander which should be over a bowl or food storage container (You could use a plastic food storage bag, but the rigidity of the container will make it easier to avoid mess). The smaller the holes in your sifter, the finer your glitter will be. I recommend using multiple containers so you can have more than one size at your disposal.

Any pieces that are too large can be blended further.
