Homemade English Muffins

In this Instructable, I will teach you how to make your own homemade English Muffins! Making these for the first time, I was surprised how simple they were to make. To bake them, I used an electric griddle, although a gas griddle will work just as well.

Supplies

  • 3/4 cup Water
  • 1 Egg
  • 3 Cups Bread Flour
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt
  • 3 Tablespoons Oil
  • 1 Tablespoon Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Malt Vinegar
  • 1-1/2 Teaspoons Red Star brand active dry yeast
  • Cornmeal

Making the Dough

Place all ingredients except cornmeal in bread pan, select Dough setting, and press start.

Once bread is done in the bread machine, place on a floured countertop or cutting board. Knead bread for a few minutes. Roll it out to about 3/8 inch thickness. Use a four inch circle cookie cutter to cut the muffins. Lightly cover the surface of a baking pan with cornmeal. Place cut muffins on the pan, leaving a little room between them, for them to raise. Lightly sprinkle cornmeal on top of them. Let rise in warm oven for 45 minutes.

Heat an ungreased griddle or electric frying pan to medium-high (375°F), then reduce heat to low (275°F). Very gently, place muffins on griddle and cook for 15 minutes. Increase heat to medium-high again (375°F), gently turn the muffins, trying not to deflate them; cook for 5 minutes, then reduce heat to low (275°F.) and cook for ten more minutes.

Let cool for ten minutes. These can be served plain, toasted with butter, covered with jelly, or turned into Eggs Benedict!!
