i made a homemade lava lamp. Its a simple project with things you might even have in you kitchen now. I made it because its easy, not a huge mess and not very time consuming but yet fun to look at:)

Supplies

For the lava lamp you'll need the following:

  • oil
  • water
  • measuring cups
  • food dye
  • alka seltzer
  • mason jar or clear container(decently big like one for pickles)

For the first step get your measuring cup, mason jar or clear container and water. Fill the mason jar or cup with 1/3 cup of water, it doesn't matter the temperature.

For this next step take the mason jar or clear container and fill it up a little more than half the way with the oily. There is no "too much" for this but there is not enough so if you're not sure add more than less!!

for this second to last step add the food coloring of your choice, just 2-4 drops you don't want to over do it. Once you add the dye don't mix it. The reaction wont be as cool, just let it react with the water and oil.

For this last step take a alka-seltzer tablet and break it up into the water. An alternate for the seltzer is : One spoon of baking soda and 2 spoons of citric acid. IF you happen to not be able to get either you can use salt. You can add a a generous amount of heavy salt or sea salt. (wont be as big of a reaction but still cool)

Last step is watch your lava lamp erupt! As your creation begins to slow down add more seltzer.
