Home Gym on a Budget Overview

This is my first Instructable.

So basically what I did was sourcing and cutting some steel plates that I bought from a scrap metal yard.

Cutting the Discs

With the help of a local engineer and me and him worked together in his workshop.

Here we cut out the holes in the plates with a gas cutter.

It creates a lot of sparks and molten iron so we placed this cone underneath to protect our pants.

Welding of Barbell

I bought a piece of scrap drilling rod and welded 50cm bars and discs on the ends to create the barbell look and dimension.

I found two end pieces of drilling rod that I screwed together, creating a compact mobile barbell and one large barbell.

Priming the Weights and Barbells

I used red oxide primer to prime the steel before painting.

I color coded the weights for the relevant category.

The End Product

This is the end product of what we built. I bolted on two tyres which had 50cm rim holes that fitted snug over the barbells. Thus it created the nice barbell that you can drop. The smaller barbell is the compact screw barbell.

As you can see it was quite a saving I made by making it myself costing a round about $130.

  • Steel - $60
  • Paint & Tools - $20
  • Labor - $40

= $130
