Home Gym Conversion - Before and After

28.jpg

From Garage to Private Home Gym.

Reclaim that space and say goodbye to membership fees!

Where to Start?

1.jpg

Have a garage sale!

Then, take the remaining 2/3 of your unsold treasures to Goodwill and donate it.

Save the Books!

Keep your library, but conceal it from view. In this fashion, your gym will look like a gym, not a resting ground. I love to read and I love to collect books (no duplicates). So, I built a wall in the process to separate the two themes.

Get Rid of the Clutter!

Almost there. Amazing the unused stuff one accumulates.

Notice the sound-proofing on the far wall? That's to deaden the sound of my drum set. Yes, been playing for a few decades. I decided to incorporate a little drum studio in the process.

The Framing Begins!

On to what I really like to do: Construction.

Build non-load bearing walls from floor to ceiling.

Locate the joists in the ceiling for this and center the studs on 16"

Add More Studs.

Add more studs if needed to accommodate the dry wall. It rarely lines up properly. The dry wall can be either vertical or horizontal. Double your estimate for both sides of the wall.

Drywall Time

Time to cover all your screw holes. Don't forget the seams. Then prime and paint. 2 coats.

Did you notice I did not spackle over the drywall in the studio? I decided on more of a retro look (and it was less work with unfinished spackling).

During this time, I decided to raise the light fixture and add power box for cable and 110V outlet.

Trim It Up!

Hide all your errors with trim (construction secret).

Do this for both top and bottom.

Add Flooring

From Amazon, I found some interlocking floor mats. A little expensive ($200) but it gives the room more of a gym feel. Notice the installed TV? What gym doesn't have a TV up in the corner, right?

Finished Transition!

Conversion complete! Goodbye LA Fitness!

Complete the look with a motivational poster and mirrors (from home depot).

Next Step? Bust out that window and replace with french doors.

Thanks for looking and leave a comment or a thumbs up!
