History of Books - Scroll With Auto Rewind
The first books were created around 500 BC as hand-written scrolls. Books have evolved over the years with Johannes Guttenberg printing press having a big impact on book availability. This project shows you how to go retro and make your own scroll. It is very simple to make and usefully for reading shorter literary works.
The deluxe version incorporates auto rewind.
Supplies
- Two empty aluminum beverage cans.
- Plastic beverage can 'clip-in'
- Wooden paint stirrer
- Tape
- Work of literature or instruction manual
- Mini printer Pocket Printer
Preperation
- Separate the clips-ins a 4 pack of beer normally come in using a pair of scissors.
- Cut a 10 cm length off wooden paint stirrer.
- Download some literature or poetry from the Gutenberg project.
- Print the literature on a mini printer to form a roll length of paper.
Making the Scroll
- Roughen up the top surface of two plastic clip-ins by sanding, then hot glue to the ends of the piece cut wooden paint stirrer.
- Clip in two empty beverage cans.
- Attach the length of printed literature to one of the cans with tape and roll it up.
- Attach the other end to the other can.
To make the deluxe model:
- Print off another piece of literature and attach it to the other can on the reverse side. This way, as you read one side the other side is rolled up - ready to be read again.

Instruction manuals can be downloaded, printed off and loaded onto the scroll.
