Hidden Coat Rack With Beautiful Laser Engraved Image
Follow these steps to craft your own hidden coat rack disguised as a beautiful laser-engraved wall piece.
Supplies
Materials Needed:
- Wood board (26" x 8" in this case) - Used Rough cut Cherry
- Dowel Rod
- Wood glue
- Screws
- Feed and wax finish
- Laser Engraver
Tools Required:
- Saw
- Jointer
- Router
- Sander
- Drill press with Forstner bit
- Laser engraver
Prepare the Wood
- I used rough cut Cherry wood for the project. The grains add aesthetic appeal.
- Cut the wood into smaller width pieces: the parts that pull out as the coat hooks are 1.5 inches thick, and the end piece around 4 inches thick. The rest of the pieces in between equally divided.
- I roughly sketched on the back of the wood the divisions and lettered / numbered them so they go together easily and the wood grains match. The ends are Z and Y, the 5 coat hooks are 1 through 5 and the division pieces are A,B,C,D.
Shape the Pieces
- Utilize miter saw to make precise cuts as per your sketched design.
- Employ the jointer to ensure edges are smooth and the alignment is correct.
- Cut a 45-degree angle on the top and bottom edges to allow the coat hook pieces to move appropriately.
Join the Pieces
- Drill holes for dowel Rods through the center of the wood pieces using a drill press.
- Insert dowel Rods and use wood glue for initial bonding.
Assemble the Rack
- Align pieces to ensure they fit tightly. Adjust with the jointer if needed to minimize gaps.
- Attach the pieces to a backer board using wood glue and screws for added stability.
Mounting Preparation
- Drill mounting holes 16 inches apart to ensure they align with wall studs.
- Use anchors for a solid wall mount.
Finish and Decorate
- Apply a feed and wax finish which adds a nice orange scent and enhances the wood’s natural color.
- Optional: Use a laser engraver to etch a design (I purchased as an SVG file from Etsy)
- Ensure the finished piece moves smoothly. Apply more feed and wax to facilitate better movement between components.
