Family Heirloom Time Capsule.
Imagine what would it be like to receive a message from your ancestors - say from 100, 200, or even 1,000 years ago?
That’s really hard to imagine and even more so what the message would say!
Well, this IBLE can’t help you with that, unless maybe we can task the Webb Telescope but Webb is busy trying to listen for a message from the early beginnings of the Universe. (Hint NASA, we already know that, it’s “Hello World, Yours Truly The Universe”
Ok, so we can’t get a message from the past but we can create a message for someone in the future with a mini-Webb and it’s $9.7 Billion cheaper. Just grab a few things you have around the house and follow along.
Supplies
Material: Just a Board and a Bulb is all you need.
Tools: A saw, ruler, pencil, and a hot glue gun (rubber cement or Shoe Goo works fine too)
Cut Wood Strips and Glue Them Up
Cut your board into strips. I used plywood and cut them into 1" width strips. Then glued the faces of two of your strips together to form a thicker strip. Here I stacked up several strips since I had many important messages to send those special someone's in the next EON.
Sand Strips Flat and Cut Into Rhombuses
Sand your strips flat so they look nice and pretty for that special someone or alien that finds your cocooned message. Then cut them into Rhombuses. What's Rhombus you ask? Well you could ask your math teacher but she’s lathe since she took the wrong bus, so I'll tell you. It's a quadrilateral whose four sides all have the same length. Now you maybe be asking, “What’s a quadrilateral?” That's a four-sided polygon. Ok I know know you are going to ask me next ..."What's a Henway- right? Jokes on you, cuz the answer to that is about 2.5 pounds.
Assemble Rhombi Into a Hexagon and Beautify
Now you are getting closer. Next position your Rhombi's to form a hexagon that looks like a 3D cube. Why - cuz that’s what one does with orphaned Rhombi. Then glue your these diamond pieces up and wrap them tightly with a rubber band or two. Finally, give them a nice stain or paint or just leave plain. It's your heirloom so make your best impression.
Mount Your Capsule
Now find an old bulb (the older the better) or vessel of your choice that will be the cocoon for your special message. Use some hot glue and carefully plant your bulb on your tumbling cube masterpiece. 3-2-1 Touchdown.
One Last Small Step for Man and One Giant Leap for Your Immortality
You have worked very hard up to this point and deserve a rest to contemplate the next step. This may be the most important step in your life, so find your quite place and mediate on what you want to say, opine, or even ask your future golden nugget message receiver. Then write it down on a strip of paper and roll it up like a dead sea scroll, date it, and insert it into your vessel.
Bonus points: If you want to add a QR code or a barcode to impart even more content that’s even better. BTW, don’t worry I’ll work it out with Musk or Bezos (or their clones) to make sure it can be decoded.
[Go 3coBytes. Elon | Jeff- Make our dreams come true.]
For even more pageantry and fun, especially if you don't have an EON time clock and want your message to be opened sooner, you can ask your special future message recipient to roll some dices and add up or multiple the numbers to set the "don't open until" date.
FIN
Congrats you did it! Your Family Heirloom Time Capsule is ready for launch. You can display it all the time or on your holiday tree, whether Christmas, Kwanzaa or Festivus (A Festival for the rest of us).
We landed ours on our Christmas tree next to our Sputnik Ornament. (Got to have Sputnik since Christmas is not official without - right Joe?)
Bonus
So now that you are an expert Heirloom Rhombi maker, you can try different woods and combine in different ways to make even more spectacular masterpieces like coasters or a rotating lethargic Larry (Susan never get's a break).
Good Luck time message travelers! You are on your way to leaving a lasting imprint for generations to come.
May the force be with you. Live long and always make prosperous Instructables.
If I get 100,000 views. I'll send one lucky IBLE commenter an HTC for their very own and one to Elon or Jeff to include in a future space launch.
Your vote will decide its future and maybe of mankind (Iblers can even provide the message).
